For the Betterment of Teens February 24, 2009

Although abstinence is the ideal situation, telling teens to just stay pure until marriage isn’t going to make them quit wanting to have sex or quit having it.  These abstinence-only programs don’t teach teens about protecting themselves, just about a personal decision, which has nothing to do with  teachers.  Kids today need to hear more than all abstinence all the time.  These classes might not affect a teen, but they could hurt the teen adversely.

Okay to Wait February 23, 2009

Though teaching teens how to protect themselves is important, it is more important to teach them to abstain from sexual activity all together.  That is the only true way to protect teens from the growing number of STD’s today.  Abstinence-only sex-education programs are the way to go to help reduce the number of sexually active teens in America.

How Much Is Too Much? February 19, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — shootstars @ 4:03 am

We all take a health class and learn the basics of sex when we’re too young to take it seriously.  But what should be taught in those classrooms and what is off-limits, is a bigger issue than I ever imagined it to be.  How much is too much to teach kids about being safe or staying pure?  The truth is adolescents need to know how to protect themselves.  An abstinence-only message won’t keep girls from getting pregnant, or guys from getting them pregnant.  Programs that only teach abstinence just aren’t getting the job done.

The 39ers! November 30, 2008

The thirty-ninth President of the United States: Jimmy Carter.  Thirty-nine years old: Age Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.  Thirty-nine revolutionaries: Number of signers of the U.S. Constitution.  The thirty-ninth chapter of The Awakening: Source for my five examples of rhetoric.  Although just about any chapter of The Awakening could be used as a reference for many literary devices, I thought that the final moments of the book and of Edna Pontellier’s life would be the best places to look.  The way Kate Chopin twists her words to make magic is a model for any writer searching for clear illustrations of how to weave in these strategies. Green Is The New Black! July 25, 2008

I have never really been a fan of the color green, but TIME’s Top Science and Health Stories feed made it clear to me that green is here to stay.  The number of articles discussing the problems in our environment was overwhelming.  I might just need to change my favorite color.

Hollywood 411 July 25, 2008

Hollywood.  The fame.  The fortune.  The legacies.  No one can seem to resist the lives of the people who walk the red carpets.  I am no different, so I turned to the Entertainment News feed  from Los Angeles Times to get the latest.  I was definitely not let down.  It seemed to me absolutely everything happening was covered.

WANTED: Positive Politics July 25, 2008

In the crazy world of politics today, I was hoping to find a slightly positive outlook when I chose to read the Nation & World Politics feed from U.S. NewsI was sadly disappointed.  Though I have come to expect hearing bashing against Bush, I also expected maybe something had gone right recently in the “land of the free’s” capital.  All I got in return was a lot of disagreements and disapproval.

My New-Found Treasure June 20, 2008

The world of blogging reaches across the planet to millions of people.  I went on a quest to narrow the millions down to three terrific blogs that spoke to me.  I found my treasure in an AP class full of great minds, who choose to share their talents with the rest of mankind.  Though each blog is tremendously unique to the next, they each stuck with me and encouraged me to voice my opinion about each one.

The War Against “Mercy” Killing May 16, 2008

Filed under: Honors English 10 — shootstars @ 6:28 pm

Euthanasia is the deed of painlessly ending the life of a person who has a terminal, painful, or difficult disease or has a handicap (“Argument….,” n. d.).  Although euthanasia is frequently known as mercy killing, there is no mercy involved in the practice.  Many followers of euthanasia compare taking the life of an ill patient to self- defense, but with self- defense, someone’s life is being rescued.  With physician-“assisted” suicide, no one’s life is being saved, but life is being taken (“Arguments against euthanasia,” n. d.).  No one would want to waste their last days plugged up to a machine and wired to tubes.  Every person has the right to die with pride instead of being reduced to a subhuman point of humanity (“Argument….,” n. d.).  Assisted suicide, or euthanasia, has more negative aspects than positive ones and should not be legalized.
